If you’ve been keeping an eye on Hero Wars Dominion Era, you might have noticed some major shifts in how skins are introduced and obtained. From the Lunar Festival Aurora skin tease to the increasing prevalence of special event maps, it’s clear that something big is happening behind the scenes.
The Mystery of the Aurora Lunar Skin

When the Lunar Festival event rolled out, players were greeted with a loading screen featuring Aurora in a stunning new Lunar Festival costume. However, this skin never made it into the game.
So, what happened?
Was this simply a piece of promotional artwork, or was the skin meant to be released and scrapped last minute? Either way, it raises questions about how future skins will be introduced.
A Shift in Skin Releases: Fewer, But Why?
Historically, Hero Wars Dominion Era released about three new skins per month. However, in 2024, we started seeing only one skin per major event, with some events—like the Lunar Festival—not featuring any new skins at all.
This change contrasts with Hero Wars Alliance (the mobile version), which continues to release multiple skins regularly. So why the shift? One theory is that the game is transitioning toward a new monetization strategy for skins.
Is Skin Monetization Changing?
A major clue to this shift came with the introduction of Lara Croft as a collaboration hero in 2023. Unlike other skins, her skin was purely cosmetic, with no stat bonuses, and was locked behind a real-money purchase.
If we look at Hero Wars Alliance, every new skin there requires real-money transactions, at least initially. Could the Dominion Era version be moving in the same direction?
The Role of Special Event Maps

Another important trend is the growing prominence of event maps, where players collect special currencies to unlock skins.
This was seen with events like CyberCon, Spooky Festival, and Winterfest.
In December, we had four separate event maps. January brought two more, and February seems to be continuing the pattern.
It appears that rather than offering skins through traditional methods (like skin stones), the game is pushing players to engage with these maps—potentially spending money on subscriptions to gather enough in-game currency.
How This Affects Emerald Spending
With the reduced skin rollout and the possibility of real-money-only skins, Emerald spending habits are likely to change. Many players who typically spend Emeralds daily on Outland chests for skin stones may start saving them for larger events.
Instead of using 36,000+ Emeralds per month on daily chest openings, players may begin stockpiling for major events like Summer Festival, Guardians of Outland, or Legacy of the Great Ones. If skins become locked behind real-money purchases, this could significantly reduce Emerald spending, potentially forcing Nexters to rethink their approach.
What’s Next?
While nothing is officially confirmed, these changes suggest that Hero Wars Dominion Era is on the verge of a significant shift in how skins are obtained. Whether this will be a welcomed change or a controversial one remains to be seen.
For now, we have some big questions:
Will the Aurora Lunar skin ever be released?
Will the upcoming Valentine’s event feature a new map instead of traditional romantic skins?
Will skins soon become real-money purchases, eliminating skin stones as a currency for new releases?
What do you think about these potential changes? Are you still spending Emeralds on daily Outland chests, or are you saving up for bigger events? Let me know in the comments!
Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, good luck in Dominion!
